Technical Specialist: HV Electrician – Geita Gold Mine
OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
Provide expert diagnostic, maintenance, and repair input for maintaining all high-voltage electrical infrastructure and HV reticulation in the underground operation with the necessary safety and quality standards in place at all times.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Health, Safety and Environment

Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and applicable codes.
- Ensure compliance to AGA/GGM and industry standards.
- Ensure compliance to Quality, HSE and Human Resources (HR) management systems, policies, procedures, and processes.
- Provide expert advice to maintenance supervisors and trades personnel engaged in the maintenance of the mining fleets and electrical infrastructures as directed by the superintendents
Asset Management
- Participate in internal audits and over-inspections to ensure adherence and compliance to asset management plans/strategy.
- Manage and update the HV maintenance document repository for drawings and manuals.
- Monitor the stock levels of critical spares and supplies.
- Monitor all UG HV infrastructure to support day-to-day underground mining activities.
- Ensure compliance with all engineering standards in underground operations on the mine.
- Monitor (assess, record, feedback) equipment performance to ensure continuous improvement.
- Development of scope of work for major works associated with the high voltage electrical works
Strategic role
- Support the Mining team in Life of Mine planning by providing early input into the design and constructability process for all HV new build infrastructure.
- In Conjunction with the UG HV Technical Specialists proactively manage and lead underground reticulation expansion and engineering construction functions,
- Manage, oversee, and monitor all HV infrastructure to support day-to-day underground mining activities.
- Co-ordinate all electrical maintenance activities to ensure reliability of equipment.
- Strong understanding of Quality, and HSE management systems.
- Drive and champion the safety-first value and apply the principle into both design and field activities.
- To ensure work is performed to the acceptable safety quality standards and that best fitment and installation practices are adhered to and imparted to the workforce.
HV Infrastructure Capital & Projects
- Assist with and maintain the underground HV infrastructure capital management process in conjunction with the GGM Capital Projects Champion.
- Assist to co-ordinate, plan, manage and execute underground electrical infrastructure projects in all GGM underground operations.
Plans, Procedures, Standards and Documentation
- Assist to develop and maintain the Life of Mine underground HV infrastructure plans, specifically infrastructure new builds and other infrastructure project construction activities, as a key sub-plan to overall underground Mining Plan
- To support the team in complying with the work schedule while attending to emerging work efficiently and to ensure the availability and reliability of equipment is optimized.
Technical Training & Development.
- Develop skills matrices for all electrical infrastructure work types.
- Identify training and development shortcomings and training needs for HV electrical technicians.
- Develop artisan refresher programs.
- To monitor maintenance skill levels, providing necessary on-the-job training whenever necessary
- To maintain a register of training for maintainers and to ensure the workforce can work without supervision
Meetings, Reviews and Communication
- Attend Mining and Maintenance Planning meetings as well as other key review meetings, as required.
- Provide regular operational and maintenance updates to the management team in relation to maintenance schedules and HV electrical issues that may impact on compliance or cause delays.
- Participate in formal HSE, risk management, change management, cost, and schedule reviews.
Progress and Performance Reporting
- Working with the planning team to ensure more jobs are planned than unplanned while emphasizing its importance to electricians associated with the job.
- To help identify work to be raised through the maintenance system as electrical backlog works for coming schedules
HV Risk, Change and Quality Management
- Identify and address HV reticulation risks early by communicating to appropriate stakeholders.
- Inspect all HV works to ensure construction activities are in accordance with engineering designs, and authority requirements.
- To continually check all work in progress by monitoring quality.
- Write repair reports with photos of each major failure and document repairs
- Make sure all the planned jobs and breakdown jobs have Works Orders, and all the works orders must be closed on the system on completion of the job.
Key Interfaces
- GGM MD, Engineering Manager, Underground Mining Manager, Technical Services Manager
- GGM Project Services Team to record, analyze, and report on progress and productivity, change management, cost, and schedule.
- Africa Technical Team to support potential operational/design issues that may occur on-site.
- EPCM and Third-Party Contractors.
Audit, Governance, and Compliance
- Participate in internal and external audits as required.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Trade test level three/Grade one in electrical and installation or FTC in electrical certificate and above
- High Voltage training Certificate
- Must Have a valid driving license
- Electrical Engineer or above will add an advantage
Experience
- Five years and above working experience on underground equipment
- High Voltage Switching
- Previous experience in a similar role or time spent working on high-voltage electrical equipment
- Ability to always demonstrate professionalism in the workplace
- Qualified High Voltage Electrician with at least 5 years’ experience in underground operations’ electrical maintenance and repairs, and at least 5 years working in international/multi-national organizations
Knowledge & Skills
- Experience in managing engineering HV infrastructure in underground mining operations
- Experience in detailed maintenance strategy of underground equipment
- Experience in maintenance of 11kV transformers, switchgear, and RMU
- Experience in MV cable splicing and terminations
- Experience with high/low voltage circuit breakers
- Knowledge of earth leakage protections
- Experience with 1000V equipment and gulley box
- Experience with jumbo drill unit
