Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, abbreviated as Asante Kotoko, is a professional football club headquartered in Kumasi, Ghana’s Ashanti Region, founded on August 31, 1935. They are known as the Porcupine Warriors and play their home games at the Baba Yara Stadium in Amakom, Kumasi, in the Ghana Premier League.
They have won the league a record 24 times as well as the CAF Champions League thrice, and the International Federation of Football History and Statistics named them the African club of the century (IFFHS).
Asante Kotoko The early years
The Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club was founded by 13 young Ashanti men led by a young driver, Mr. Kwasi Kumah, and well assisted by an electrician, L.Y. Asamoah.
Mr. Kwasi Kumah, a native of Nyankyerenease near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, worked as a chauffeur for Colonel Ross, an Englishman and military commander.
After watching an intense football match, Kwasi Kumah developed the concept of starting a football team.
When Colonel Ross finally came home, Kumah purchased a pair of jerseys to create his football team.
In 1926, he founded the Ashanti United Football Club with the help of his personal friend, L.Y. Asamoah. The squad was renamed Kumasi Titanics five years later.The squad was severely hampered since the majority of the players were relocated from Kumasi and worked in government agencies like as prisons and railways.
The “Kumasi Titanics” did not have enough luck with their new moniker, so they changed it to Mighty Atoms in 1934.
However, the club did not make much progress, and in 1935, Mr J.S.K. Frimpong, popularly known as Teacher Frimpong, a teacher at the Kumasi Government School who had always shown interest in the club, organized some men from his school and proposed a name change from “Kumasi Titanics” to Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club.
Permission from the Asantehene (King of the Kingdom of Ashanti) was required since the term “Kotoko,” which means “Porcupine,” is the Ashanti nation’s official emblem.
Nana Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, the Asantehene, became the club’s first life patron. The Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club was initially established in 1935.
The Asante Kotoko insignia depicts a “Porcupine” with an armament of sharp spikes for use when assaulted by an opponent.
