UG Electrical Superintendent – Barrick Mining
Responsibilities
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce compliance with all electrical and mechanical safety standards (IEC, IEEE, Mine Standards).
- Ensure strict adherence to LOTOTO and LV/MV switching procedures.
- Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Drive a zero-harm culture within UG operations.
Asset Reliability and Performance
- Ensure high availability of critical UG infrastructure:
- Ventilation systems
- Pumping systems
- Compressed air systems
- Electrical distribution (MV/LV)
- Monitor equipment performance and implement reliability improvement plans.
- Drive root cause analysis (RCA) on failures and recurring defects.
Maintenance Execution and Planning
- Oversee execution of planned and breakdown maintenance.
- Ensure quality of maintenance aligned with OEM standards.
- Validate and improve PM strategies in collaboration with Planning and Reliability teams.
- Ensure availability of critical spares and technical documentation.
Technical Governance
- Ensure all UG electrical systems comply with approved:
- SLD’s and GA drawings
- Protection settings and coordination studies
- Engineering standards and specifications
- Approve technical changes and modifications.
- Drive standardization across UG assets.
Operational Coordination
- Align engineering activities with mining production requirements.
- Coordinate shutdowns, changeovers, and major interventions.
- Ensure readiness for peak load management and operational constraints.
Projects and Continuous Improvement
- Lead execution of UG electrical/mechanical projects.
- Identify and implement efficiency and cost-saving initiatives.
- Support capital projects and integration into operations.
Reporting and Performance Management
- Establish and maintain structured reporting:
- Daily operational reports
- Weekly performance reviews
- Monthly KPI tracking
- Key KPIs include:
- Equipment availability (%)
- MTBF / MTTR
- Power quality impact on UG operations
- Safety metrics
- Provide consolidated UG engineering performance reports to Site Electrical Superintendent.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead and develop UG engineering teams.
- Ensure competency in MV/HV operations and mechanical systems.
- Drive accountability and performance across foremen and supervisors.

Qualification requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is required.
- Postgraduate qualification is an added advantage.
- Professional certification in Engineering.
- Professional certification or licensure in electrical engineering is preferred.
Experience and competencies needed.
- 10+ Years of experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, Automation, Control systems and PLC’s.
- Minimum 8-10 years of electrical maintenance experience in mining, heavy industry, or industrial operations.
- MV & LV electrical system proven experience is required
- Experience with underground electrical distribution systems and mining equipment.
- Experience on high-voltage and low-voltage power distribution.
- Proficiency on how to read and comprehend complex written Electrical repair manuals, schematics and other written materials.
- Sound Knowledge in Pneumatic systems and Equipment/instrument Calibration.
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles.
- Excellent knowledge of technologically advanced instrumentation and control systems.
- Experience in project management principles.
- Critical thinking, coordination, time management, & interpersonal skills.
- High problem solving/troubleshooting Skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Hazard identification and Risk assessment.
- Possess a valid light vehicle manual-class driving license.
- High level in systems analysis, evaluation, judgement & decision making.
- Ability to consistently manage such a diversified portfolio in a high-pressure environment.
