ATTACKER Cody Gakpo scored a goal to help the Netherlands emerge with a 2-0 victory over the hosts Qatar in the Group A match that gave them a ticket to enter the round of 16 at the World Cup finals this year.

While the Netherlands finished their group campaign at the top of Group A with seven points, Qatar, who had already bid farewell to the World Cup, lost their third consecutive tournament.

Under coach Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands, who missed out on the World Cup in 2018 in Russia, have qualified for the round of 16 this year without losing a single match. They will now meet the team that will fight for second place in Group B which includes England, America, Wales and Iran.

African champions, Senegal swept aside Ecuador in another Group A clash and ended their campaign in second place. As it is, the coaches of Aliou Cisse will now meet England while the Netherlands will face America in the elimination round.

Gakpo, who is a dangerous forward of PSV Eindhoven, has now scored the first goal in all three matches played by the Netherlands in the group stage.

The second Dutch goal was filled in the net by Frenkie de Jong who cooperated well with Memphis Depay, Davy Klaassen, Virgil van Dijk and Gakpo who is heavily linked with Manchester United.

Gakpo, 23, is now the first Dutch player to score in his first three World Cup finals appearances. The star has now been involved in 35 goals from 29 matches at club and national team level where he has scored 17 goals and contributed 18 others.

In addition to being beaten in three consecutive matches in their first appearance in the World Cup, Qatar also conceded seven goals, the number being the highest for the nation that is the host of the tournament ever received in the group stage.

With the 23rd edition of the 2026 World Cup involving 48 teams instead of 32, Qatar have another opportunity to qualify for the tournament, this time through the qualifiers after the hosts gave them a direct ticket to participate in this year’s finals.

Ecuador would advance to the round of 16 at the top of Group A if they beat Senegal with more goals than the Netherlands scored against Qatar. The prize for finishing at the top is to meet America – number two in Group B which also includes Iran, Wales and England who will face Senegal.

Despite not having enough strength with Ecuador for a 1-1 draw in their second match in Group A, the Netherlands are proud of the great revival of their edge under coach Van Gaal who led them to qualify for the finals of the third article of the UEFA Nations League this year 2022.
