The Legal Assistant, Court Monitoring-Mkomazi will assist the supervisor in the advancement of AWF’s Mission and AWF’s engagement in counter wildlife trafficking and enhancement of deterrent sentencing in Tanzania. The Legal Assistant, Court Monitoring will work with other Species Conservation and Science team members, other Tsavo-Mkomazi landscape team members and other team members in various programs in Tanzania and Kenya to contribute towards overall goals. This position will report to the Legal Officer, Court Monitoring and will be based in Same, Tanzania.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Court Monitoring in the five districts in Mkomazi i.e. Korogwe, Mkinga, Mwanga, Rombo and Same.
• Attend court and collect data on wildlife crime investigation, prosecution and adjudication in in the five districts.
• Support TANAPA, TAWA, District Game Officers, and ODPP in case preparation and assist in strengthening cases where necessary including but not limited to witness attendance, exhibit management and case file management.
•  Assist in organizing on the-job-support trainings (OJTs) towards enhancing successful prosecution of wildlife crimes.
• Organize, facilitate and participate Wildlife Judicial and Prosecutorial Assistance Trainings (WJPATs).
• Document and prepare proceedings for WJPATs.
• Prepare and submit quarterly court monitoring reports.
• With guidance from the supervisor, develop tools and guidelines that have been developed to support wildlife law enforcement with an aim of improving them.
• Analyse wildlife cases and document processes, outcomes and lessons to improve prosecution and sentencing.

• Work collaboratively with landscape team members based in Same (Tanzania) and Voi (Kenya) to attain overall objectives of AWF in the Tsavo-Mkomazi landscape.
• Carry out any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Law with at least 1 year post graduate experience.
• Experience or interest in environmental law prosecution and/or law enforcement.
• Fluency in English and Swahili.
• Strong report writing and data collection skills.
• Computer skills.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and also as a team
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Keen demonstrable interest in conservation of natural resources and wildlife in particular
• Commitment to AWF and its mission.
