Job Title: Pumphouse Chemigation Operator


Job Purpose
We are seeking a Pumphouse Chemigation Operator who will be responsible for Overseeing the efficient operation, maintenance, and supervision of irrigation and fertilization systems in the Kikonyo nursery.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing and maintaining the irrigation systems that supply water to seedlings in the nursery.
  • Ensuring that pumps, filtration units, fertigation system and related equipment operate efficiently to provide adequate water and nutrients to plants.
  • Monitoring water flow, adjust settings based on nursery needs, and troubleshoot any issues to prevent damage to the seedlings
  • To run and take care of the computational system and all nursery piping system.
  • Performs routine maintenance, record operational data, and may assist in setting up or redesigning irrigation systems for optimal plant growth.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the pumphouse and fertilization systems to ensure consistent performance
  • Develop and implement regular maintenance plans for pumps, pipelines, filters, and fertilization equipment.
  • The role is crucial for maintaining the health and productivity of nursery plants, adhering to operational goals and environmental standards.
  • Manage irrigation schedules to meet the water requirements of sugarcane seedlings based on the nursery management instructions
  • Ensure the parameters of water storage in the water tank are fully observed and promote a tight communication with KSC irrigation management to skip water supply avoidable challenges
  • Ensure precise mixing and application of fertilizers to promote seedling growth and avoid nutrient waste or toxicity
  • Monitor and maintain water quality standards to prevent clogging and ensure healthy plant growth
  • Maintain stock of fertilizers, spare parts, and other essential supplies, ensuring timely replenishment
  • Prevent, diagnose and resolve mechanical or operational issues in the irrigation and fertilization systems, or address the issue to the competent technician promptly
  • Calibrate fertigation and irrigation systems regularly to ensure uniform nutrient and water delivery
  • Adjust irrigation and fertilization schedules based on weather forecasts and on the nursery weather station to optimize resource use
  • Record and analyses data on water usage, nutrient application, and system performance for decision-making
  • Ensure operations comply with local agricultural and environmental regulations
  • Enforce safety protocols for operating and maintaining equipment to protect staff and assets
  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance system efficiency and reduce costs with traceable and comparable information
  • Collaborate with the nursery management to monitor sugarcane seedling health and adjust water and nutrient supply accordingly
  • Develop and implement contingency plans for system failures or environmental challenges
  • Respond promptly to system breakdowns or emergencies to minimize downtime
  • Prepare information for the subsequent budgets for maintenance, operations, and system improvements
  • Oversee routine cleaning and maintenance of irrigation pipelines to prevent blockages
  • Support pest management efforts by ensuring proper water and fertilizer application, reducing pest risks and/or toxicity
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential system vulnerabilities
  • Conduct routinely meetings with the team to review the equipment and operation procedures
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all system operations, maintenance activities, and upgrades
  • Prepare and submit required reports for regulatory bodies (if applicable) and management
  • Stay updated on industry advancements and recommend new tools, equipment, or methods to improve irrigation nursery performance.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety standards

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture engineering, agronomy, soil science or Equivalent.
  • Relevant certifications in agricultural management or fertilization systems can be beneficial.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or lead role within an agricultural or production environment.

Terms of Service: The successful candidate will be engaged on a permanent pensionable contract
